Portrait Session in Downtown Seattle

We finally got some nice weather for portraits in Seattle! While I had been shooting a lot of sports lately, I knew I needed to get out and work on my portraits now that high school senior photography season is coming up once I get back to the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area. I was lucky enough to rope one of my friends (and some awesome assistants) into helping me out.

We headed downtown where I knew we would find tons of locations. What's great about urban locations for high school senior pictures is that there's great diversity in locations and every time you can find something a little bit different due to the changing urban landscape. One thing that's a little bit different about Seattle than Portland is more alleys (or so it seems).

During my portrait sessions for my high school senior clients, I'm always on the lookout because you never know what locations will present themselves. I found a great out cove with some great shrubbery that really brought out her outfit.

One thing I love about using the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens is that I can stand far enough away for a full body shot and then zoom in and grab a nice close up. This is amazing to work with and provides excellent flexibility during photo sessions.

One aspect about urban portraiture that I love is the color that you sometimes find. There were these wind catchers outside a shop that gave a nice little pop of color-- I knew I had to use these!

I wanted to use the famous Post-Alley and the graffiti wall that's across from the Gum Wall in Pike Place Market, but there just wasn't enough light and quickly gave up on this idea. There was a nice wall right around the corner that had ivy and flowers, which we decided to use before heading down to the waterfront.

It ended up being a little bit cool, but it was still a great time nonetheless and we got some terrific images! One thing is for certain... I am ready for high school senior picture season!
